I finally get what they mean when they ask you to find yourself.
When they ask you to find "who or what am I?" and you can't find anything, that no-thing IS the answer. It is the state you are looking for, right before your eyes! It's so obvious that we overlook it.
So when you can't find anything, that's a good sign, you are recognizing the state already. It is the state of seeming non-attention, or loss of attention based on form. You can inquire something like, "what would reality be like if I couldn't be aware of it? If I didn't have any attention to sense or place on form, what would that be like?"
At first, you may not have a state change immediately, but you may come upon the insight of that state, the insight of the non-form-based state. With the insight, you can start clearing away all the lower energies blocking you from the state, if you repeatedly contemplate on that insight and hold it in mind.
The insight seems like it is not an object of experience (even though I think it is, just very subtle). It feels like it is nothing, nothing that your mind can grab hold of. So keep that in mind when you are looking for it, it's not something you can point to and say, "this is it!" It's more like nothing than something.
In my experience, contemplation on the insight will bring about energy movement and clearing of blocks in the energy system. That is what I use to gauge how successful my contemplation is. My state didn't really change much at all during the months of contemplation I did, but there are small, almost imperceptible changes in awareness, like forms and objects feeling more "empty", and feeling more like space everywhere and less identified with the body. The forms don't feel solid anymore. That is because the attention is starting to pull away from forms and into non-form, so you start to stop "sensing" forms as much. It seems like attention on form will gradually decrease until it completely disappears, and non-form will become the reality.
However, that is not the endpoint! That is only the beginning. I don't know what happens after this, frankly :) but I know there's a long path ahead of me :)
